I have been helping plan and document Gatlinburg elopements for years, and if there is one thing I have learned along the way, it’s that there is always a chance for rain! Even if the rain isn’t pouring or sprinkling, the mountains tend to fill with fog. Which is part of the reason we love the Smokies! So if you happen to be eloping to Gatlinburg on a rainy day, or just have an overcast and foggy elopement, I am here with some sage advice and tips!
Perspective
The best thing you can do for yourself as you elope to Gatlinburg is to romanticize EVERYTHING. Having this perspective will crush unrealistic expectations and lead to a stress-free elopement. Because let’s face it, if you are eloping, you probably want to relax and enjoy every moment. So choose to love every moment, even if the forecast calls for a down pour!
In the same vein, I understand the disappointment that comes when you are excited to see the Smoky Mountains, and instead, you get thick fog and clouds. Although this is heart breaking, it is also gorgeous. Some of my favorite galleries have come from rainy elopements with bright green woods contrasting with the fog of the Smokies. These views are inspiring and so romantic. In addition, it is common to have break in the fog so you can still get a few shots of the mountain tops, or even move your ceremony time if the stars align with other vendors and your permit!
Umbrellas For Two
Umbrellas are a must for rainy day wedding photos! They add such a darling touch to your photos, while also serving such a practical purpose. The most elegant and timeless umbrellas for weddings are clear umbrellas. If you do not have your own clear umbrellas ask your vendors if they have any you can borrow incase the weather turns to rain. Most venues will have some, but also check with your officiant and Gatlinburg wedding photographer. I personally always have clear umbrellas in the back of my car!
Back-Up Plan For Rainy Elopement
Always have a back-up plan when you are planning an outdoor elopement! For a Gatlinburg elopement I recommend having your cabin as your back up plan. A lot of cabins in the Smokies have covered porches and decks that make for great outdoor ceremony spaces.
Eloping To Gatlinburg On A Rainy Day
Above all, hope for the best! Nothing is guaranteed when you choose to elope in a National Park. Sometimes the rain lasts for 20 minutes and we have sunshine for the rest of the day. Other times, there isn’t much of a break at all. As a seasoned Gatlinburg wedding photographer. I have been shooting in rainy days in the Smoky Mountains for years and am beyond confident in this type of weather! So in addition to hoping for the best, trust your Gatlinburg photographer!
